A multidisciplinary study conducted with Şenol Pişkin, Özlem Elvan, Kaan Esen, Deniz Uzmansel and Samir Donmazov was presented by Şenol Pişkin at the 23rd National Anatomy Congress.

The paper titled "3D Reconstruction of Kidneys in Cadaver Foetus" was presented as an oral presentation by Şenol Pişkin at the 23rd National Anatomy Congress, hosted by Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, in Ankara on October 14, 2023.

Two formalin-fixed foetuses (a 33-week-old boy and a 40-week-old girl) were utilized. Radiological images of the foetuses were acquired using a 1.5 Tesla MR system with T2-weighted sequences. The image sections obtained were automatically filled to encompass the entire kidney region. This approach allowed for the capture of the 3D shape of the kidneys. Following this procedure, all stained kidney sections were merged, resulting in the 3D reconstruction of the anatomical structure. Subsequently, the created 3D node cluster was saved in stereolithography file format, which is one of the most suitable standard formats for 3D modelling, editing, and printing. Using this model, the size and volume of the kidneys were measured.

This study combines engineering and an anatomical case study. Such studies can be used to help determine the approach for planned surgery in patients. Continuing this study, we aim to utilize a convolutional neural network, an artificial intelligence method, to achieve high-accuracy image segmentation.
