Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences

History

Faculty of Engineering was established on April 23, 2015. After the establishment of the faculty, Software Engineering, Electrical-Electronics Engineering and Civil Engineering Departments were opened on January 11, 2017. The first students within the Department of Software Engineering were admitted to the Software Engineering Undergraduate Program that provides education in Turkish in the 2017-2018 academic year, and to the Software Engineering Undergraduate Program that provides education in English in the 2021-2022 academic year. The first students within the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering were admitted to the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Undergraduate Program, which provides education in English, in the 2018-2019 academic year. The first students within the Department of Civil Engineering were admitted to the Civil Engineering Undergraduate Program, which provides education in English, in the 2018-2019 academic year, and it was decided not to accept new students in the 2022-2023 academic year.

Departments of Computer Engineering and Mechanical Engineering were opened on March 21, 2018, and Department of Industrial Engineering was opened on March 28, 2018. The first students within the Department of Computer Engineering were admitted to the Computer Engineering Undergraduate Program, which provides education in English, in the 2018-2019 academic year, and to the Computer Engineering Undergraduate Program, which provides education in Turkish, in the 2022-2023 academic year. The first students within the Department of Mechanical Engineering were admitted to the English-medium Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Program in the 2019-2020 academic year. The first students within the Department of Industrial Engineering were admitted to the Industrial and Systems Engineering Undergraduate Program, which provides education in English, in the 2018-2019 academic year, and as of the 2020-2021 academic year, the program continued as the Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Program.

Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Bioinformatics and Genetics were opened on March 3, 2021. The first students within the Department of Biomedical Engineering were admitted to the English-medium Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Program in the 2021-2022 academic year. The first students within the Department of Bioinformatics and Genetics were admitted to the Bioinformatics and Genetics Undergraduate Program, which is taught in English, in the 2021-2022 academic year, and it was decided not to accept new students with the 2022-2023 academic year.

The Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences was established on June 30, 2021, and all undergraduate programs opened before this date in the Faculty of Engineering, as well as undergraduate programs in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and the Undergraduate Program in Mathematics were moved to this faculty. While the first students of the Molecular Biology and Genetics Undergraduate program that is taught in Turkish were admitted in the 2017-2018 academic year, the first students of the Molecular Biology and Genetics Undergraduate program that is taught in English, were admitted in the 2018-2019 academic year. Students are no longer admitted to the program that provides education in Turkish. The Mathematics Undergraduate Program, which provides education in English, admitted its first students in the 2019-2020 academic year.

As the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences was established, the Department of Chemistry was also opened on the same date. The Chemistry Undergraduate Program, which provides education in English within the Department of Chemistry, admitted its first students in the 2021-2022 academic year.

There are 12 undergraduate programs within the 10 departments in the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, where 2 of them are in Turkish-medium and 10 of them are in English-medium.

Also, there are 4 master's degree and 1 doctorate (PhD) program within the Graduate School. The master's degree programs are Molecular Biologly and Genetics, Computer Engineering, Artificial Intelligence Engineering and Cyber Security. The sole doctorate program is Chemistry.

One of the most important milestones in the faculty's activities in 2022 and 2023 is the comprehensive curriculum change and update studies in all programs. As a result of these studies, the updates made in the curricula were implemented to be applied to all students in the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 academic years.

In line with the high research-oriented goals of our university, our faculty aims to conduct advanced technology-based research, produce new knowledge and technologies, and contribute to the development of society by developing solutions to local and universal problems. In line with our university's vision, integrating research and development activities that are centered on artificial intelligence within all our engineering and natural sciences fields, and producing products that touch our lives are among the most important priorities of our faculty. It continues its journey with a rich national and international academic staff who have  a wide range of research topics and high research potential while turning research results into benefit and constantly strives to be better.

One of the most effective ways to improve ourselves and engage in R&D studies that can touch life more effectively is to take part in national and international working groups where interdisciplinary interaction is ensured. All our academics are encouraged to develop collaborations with other research groups at home and abroad. One of the best examples of this is our academics working in the world's leading basic research and technology centers such as CERN. Another example is the Research Center for Artificial Intelligence Applications in Medicine.

Our faculty's understanding of education has a student-centered structure that constantly follows, adopts, and implements new developments in cooperation with the sector, in connection with the mission of our university. Our aim; is to raise individuals who act with team spirit, can compete at a universal level, approach problems rationally, make strategic plans, attach importance to knowledge, follow the scientific path, have ethical values, can produce beneficial outputs, are responsible towards society, and innovative and entrepreneurial leaders who direct society. It is aimed to contritube graduates from İstinye who have a lifelong learning philosophy, have learned to learn, work project-oriented and produce to society.
