Istinye University Department of Industrial Engineering has signed an Erasmus+ agreement for student/staff exchange partnership with the Department of Industrial Engineering at Politehnica University of Bucharest (Romania). Within the scope of the program, students who are at least 2nd grade will be eligible to apply for an Erasmus grant of 3-12 months to study at the partner university. Students who wish to apply to the program must apply through the International Office.
The project submitted to 2535 TÜBİTAK-MSRT Joint Project Call by Dr. Nadi Serhan Aydın in collaboration with Iranian researchers Prof. İraj Mahdavi and Dr. Erfan Babaee’s, and titled “Multi-Criteria Decision Making, Mathematical Modeling and Dynamic Programming for Sustainable Mass Production Planning” has been selected for grant. The project aims to solve a multi-objective optimization problem in manufacturing by implementing environmental, economic and social sustainability criterias within the model through a multi-criteria decision making algorithm, thereby developing a sustainability-based production model. Dr. Mustafa Mısır, our Head of Computer Engineering, is also taking part in the project.
A new paper by Nadi Serhan Aydın (with Prof. Dr. Martin Rainer) titled “Asset-backed Stable Numéraire Approach for Sustainable Valuation” is accepted for publication in the Journal of Sustainable Finance and Investment. The article reveals the de-stabilizating effect on financial and non-financial asset prices of the conventional evaluation instruments in the field of financial engineering such as “stochastic short rate” and provides a new sustainability-based financial “benchmark” for asset valuation.
Our Engineering Faculty member Dr. Mustafa Mısır gave a speech titled Artificial Intelligence against COVID-19 as an invited speaker in the webinar named COVID-19: Modeling; Artificial Intelligence and Innovative Technologies to Flatten the Curve, organized by the College of Engineering and College of Health Sciences at the Qatar University.
Ataberk Özaydın, a freshman at the Department of Software Engineering in our Faculty of Engineering, developed a new mobile app with his software team of five following a 3-month study. The team’s app shortly achieved success on app markets.
Assoc. Prof. Şener Özönder, a lecturer in our Faculty of Engineering works as one of the four researchers in the project entitled “Nano-Developed and Scalable Quantum Dot Solar Cell Design, Manufacturing and Characterization” prepared within the Nanotechnology Research Center of Istanbul Technical University (ITUnano).
Our Faculty of Engineering produced face shields to deliver to healthcare workers from various hospitals who make every single effort to help those suffering from COVID-19.
We will continue our support for healthcare workers in these challenging times.
Nadi Serhan Aydın, Head of Department of Industrial Engineering, (with Prof. Gerhard-Wilhelm Weber, Dr. Ioannis Baltas and Dr. Emel Savku) has written the foreword of the recently published book named “Handbook of Research on Smart Computing for Renewable Energy and Agro-Engineering”. The book focuses on the benefits and difficulties in applying computational models to energy resources and agricultural manufacturing areas and also examines the potentials of the model to decrease the costs and create sustainable solutions.
A paper titled "A Bi-objective Constrained Robust Gate Assignment Problem: Formulation, Instances and Algorithm" as our Engineering Faculty member Dr. Mustafa Mısır is one of the authors, was published in the journal of IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics. The paper was co-authored together with the researchers from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA), City University of Hong Kong (CityU-HK), Civil Aviation University of China (CAUC) and Shantou University.
Our Engineering Faculty member Dr. Mustafa Mısır will organize a panel titled Stream on Hyper-heuristis at the 22nd Conference of the International Federation of Operational Research Societies (IFORS 2020), held in South Korea, together with academicians from the University of Pretoria (South Africa) and the University of Nottingham (UK).

The grant will be provided by the COST action CA15140 - Improving Applicability of Nature-Inspired Optimization by Joining Theory and Practice (ImAppNIO). The relevant scientific visit will be to University College Dublin (Ireland).

Our Engineering Faculty member Dr. Mustafa Mısır presented his article "Active Matrix Completion for Algorithm Selection" at the 5th International Conference on Machine Learning, Optimization, and Data Science (LOD). The article will be published as a proceedings paper in Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) - Springer.
Based on our painful experiences, we know that it’s not the earthquake itself, a natural phenomenon, which kills and causes considerable economic losses, but non-durable buildings, bridges and infrastructure.
A group of students from the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Istinye
University visited Turk Telekom Ventures (TTV). Accompanied by Asst. Prof. N. Serhan
Aydin, the students were received by Muhammed Ozhan, CEO of TTV. Also present at the
meeting were 3 managers of TTV with Industrial Engineering backgrounds, namely, Mr.
Salim Yilmaz, Mr. Rasit Turkmen and Mr. Orhan Akyurek, who are in charge of business,
product and strategy development at Turk Telekom (TT).
TTV was established as a wholly owned subsidiary of Turk Telekom Group in February 2018
in order to support the core activities of early / mid stage start-ups which have high growth
potential and synergies with the telecommunications sector, in order to invest directly money
and/or capital in kind to such start-ups and create value from their growth.
During the visit, the students were able to listen from the TTV executives a comprehensive
presentation on their company activities and benefit from their experiences on issues related
to the professional business life. Besides, the potential areas of cooperation between Istinye
University and TTV such as IoT, Smart Cities, Digital Health and Education, Fintech, and
Business Intelligence, were also discussed.

A group of Industrial Engineering students at İstinye University visited TUV SUD through our “Mentor'un CEO Olsun” programme. Industrial Engineering Faculty Member Dr. Nadi Serhan Aydın and Sector Cooperation Office officials also accompanied the students on the visit.
Our students were accepted by TÜV SÜD General Manager of Turkey Emre Büyükkalfa and his team. TUV SUD provides inspection, certification, testing, consulting and training services in quality, security, and sustainability areas and in major sectors such as energy, manufacturing, infrastructure, real estate, automotive at more than 1000 locations all around the world.
On the visit, our students had a chance to watch a detailed presentation by the TUV SUD officials where they learned about the company and to ask questions regarding the sector to Emre Buyukkalfa and his team.
Computer Science department faculty member Asst. Prof. Dr. Funda Özdemir was invited to "Codes, Cryptology and Curves conference" on 7-8 March, 2019 held by Technische Universiteit Eindhoven as a speaker.
